The Swiss system (sometimes called the 4th generation of artificial turf) represents a true revolution in artificial turf technology designed primarily for football.
It is a combination of a specially designed , infill-free artificial turf and a flexible cushioning pad made of expanded polypropylene (EPP), which was originally developed by BASF for the aerospace and then automotive industries. It was only based on the requirements of leading physiotherapists and biomechanics that this material was subsequently adapted for sports use.

Custom artificial turf XL TURF with a fiber height of 25 mm or 30 mm (depending on type) is made of high-quality straight monofilament 100% PE fiber woven into a textile latex-sealed warp at a very high density.
These fibers are supplemented with additional spirally corrugated 100% PE fibers , which improve the vertical properties of the turf, stabilize the straight fibers and provide the required adhesion , grip and traction - thereby fully replacing backfill materials (silica sand and rubber granulate).

The XL TURF artificial turf has a higher purchase price than classic 3rd generation infill turf. However, 3rd generation turf requires relatively significant and constant annual operating costs. They require regular maintenance - leveling the granulate layer, backfilling and brushing.
In higher summer temperatures , the black rubber granulate heats up and emits a typical "rubber" odor . In addition, this high temperature of the substrate is unpleasant for athletes ("burns" the soles). In the summer months, it is therefore recommended to sprinkle these "granulate" lawns to reduce the temperature. In addition, the granulate still sticks to the clothing, shoes and hair of athletes - who get dirty and carry it off the field.
The only maintenance is occasional cleaning of fallen leaves , needles or "garbage" , etc. - which can be easily done by brushing and vacuuming with common municipal equipment for cleaning roads, or common sweeping machines for cleaning sidewalks and surfaces (e.g. Kärcher KM 90/60).
Cleaning is carried out as needed, and brushing also " revitalizes" the straightness of the fibers. If there are deciduous trees around the playground, it can be assumed that there will be quite a lot of pollution from fallen leaves.
With 3rd generation infill turfs, this is very difficult to remove and requires expensive special machinery to separate the infill material from the leaves. This of course further increases the operating costs for maintaining a sports field with infill artificial turf.
3rd generation infill artificial turf is produced by a number of manufacturers – it differs in fiber type , density and last but not least, quality and price. Unfortunately, the low price also corresponds to the quality and durability. Manufacturers of these turfs usually provide a 5-year warranty and the durability is around 10-12 years.
The warranty on XL TURF artificial turf is 8 years and the service life ranges between 15-25 years (depending on the load). When replacing XL TURF artificial turf after its service life, only the turf carpet is replaced , the EPP underlay remains in good condition for many decades , which of course saves costs.
If we compare the total costs , i.e. acquisition and operating costs - the XL TURF lawn has higher acquisition costs and low operating costs - i.e. in total, after about 5-6 years , these costs are balanced and in subsequent years the XL TURF lawn is already economically more advantageous.
